The Iranian Intermezzo saw the rise and fall of several major and minor dynasties. Among the most important of these overlapping dynasties were the
Tahirids in
Khorasan (821–873); the
Saffarids in
Sistan (861–1003, their rule lasted as maliks of Sistan until 1537); and the
Samanids (819–1005), originally at
Bukhara. The Samanids eventually ruled an area from central Iran to Pakistan.
