How Many Satellites Are in Space?
The total number of objects in Earth orbit depends on whether one counts only active satellites or everything humanity has placed in space, including debris. The European Space Agency (ESA) reports over 40,230 artificial objects regularly tracked by Space Surveillance Networks. Beyond those, estimates suggest approximately 900,000 pieces of debris between 1–10 cm in size and more than 128 million pieces smaller than 1 cm are also in orbit, too small to track reliably.
Of the active, operational satellites, SpaceX's Starlink constellation dominates the count.
