Jack Lucas lied about his age and joined the Marine Corps at 14. When they found out how young he actually was, they restricted him to barracks in preparation to send him home.
Instead he stowed away on a troop ship headed for Iwo Jima and landed with the rest of his Marine buddies. On his first day in combat in a close-quarter fight with Japanese soldiers, Jack looked down to see two enemy grenades rolling in at his feet. Knowing that he was about to die, Jack fell on both grenades to shield his buddies from the blast.
Because of his selfless sacrifice, the marines with him were able to kill the enemy and win the fight. When they went back to collect his body, incredibly, they discovered he still clung to life.
He was evacuated to a hospital ship, survived, and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by Harry Truman at the end of the war.
Jack then went back to high school; the only incoming Freshman in the country with a Medal of Honor.
