Ischemia also induces production of
oxygen free radicals and other
reactive oxygen species. These react with and damage a number of cellular and extracellular elements. Damage to the blood vessel lining or endothelium may occur. These processes are the same for any type of ischemic tissue and are referred to collectively as the
ischemic cascade.
